Video: Commercial Drive Festival

Two minutes of footage from the first Commercial Drive Festival, Vancouver, Canada, in 2005. Several blocks were cordoned off and the hordes descended to dance and play in the street. The festival was also designed to send a message to the provincial government in Victoria that plans to expand the highway would not be popular.

Commercial Drive is like the high street of East Vancouver, but is also a busy throughfare for car traffic. Many European cities now close off city centres to cars. Other cities do so during the busy Summer months, or restrict traffic to buses and taxis only.

Certainly, Vancouver would be more fun if street parties or block parties were allowed to happen more regularly, and if non-motorised traffic had an extra lane or two on Commercial Drive.
